With two back-to-back losses at the hands of Arsenal and Wolves, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United are certainly struggling to meet their previous standards from earlier in the season.
While the side’s form under the caretaker boss since his appointment in December has been undeniable, fans and the players themselves will hope they can soon regain momentum for the important period ahead.
United’s tactical transformation under Solskjaer has been well-documented, and has proven to be successful with the side losing just three games in all competitions since December.
One player to enjoy the new forward-pressing style of football has been Marcus Rashford. Under Solskjaer’s guise, and an extensive run at centre-forward, Rashford has achieved his highest-scoring senior season to date.
In a recent interview with Jermaine Jenas for GQ, Rashford was asked whether there are any strikers in the Premier League he admires.
And his answer might surprise Red Devils fans.
The 21-year-old revealed that he thinks Manchester City star Sergio Aguero is the best in the league.
He said: “I think probably the most all-round centre forward is Sergio Aguero.
“Even on an off day, he can score you three of four goals. That, for me, is one trait of a centre forward that I would take all day long.
“When you’re not having a good game, but you’re still scoring goals, that is a skill on its own.”
Later on in the interview, Rashford goes on to talk about how with United’s new-found attacking-heavy style of football, there comes greater risks.
He said: “He [Solskjaer] has come in and the first thing he was going on to us all about was playing forward, and playing forward when you see the pass.
“When the other team have the ball, we have one eye on our defensive duties, but then another eye is on finding space if we win it back.
“I’d say that’s been the biggest change, and it’s risky, but it’s worth the risk if it pays off. If we do both like the team’s willing to do – the forwards are willing to track back – we can look forward to a lot of the games in the future.”
Insightful words from such a young star.
